Interview: Tim Nash On Social Media, Digg, StumbleUpon & His New Membership Site

Digg, Interview, Social Media, StumbleUpon3 Comments »

Tim Nash of Venture SkillsBrendan - Tim I want to thank you for taking the time to talk with us today. Can you tell us a bit about what you do?

Tim - I’m a jack of all trades, my company specializes in reputation management and SERP control, but I have a wide range of interests and am particularly fascinated with social media optimization which has been the focal point for my research in recent years. I’m probably best known for my work studying StumbleUpon users though I don’t just limit myself to one particular group.

Brendan - From what I understand you have quite an impressive academic background. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Tim Nash - Not much to say went to university studied became far too anal for my own good, before realizing that before hiding in a university your entire life that you need a life. It’s sad that my ideal retirement job will be hiding in a dusty lab once more.

Brendan – You’re currently teaching at a university aren’t you? Computer science?

Tim - Two universities are blessed with my current teachings in ‘Internet Technology’ which is becoming a discipline in itself. My current classes include Information retrieval and an introduction to search engine optimization (though I have renamed this unofficially to SEO for the damned)

Brendan - [Laughs] Sounds fun. Are you or your students working on any exciting projects pertaining to these disciplines?

Tim - I have a few projects on the go at any one time; my current projects include more reliable methods for tracking users and user actions, studying user voting patterns and a means to identify possible “gamers” on standard Pligg systems. I also have little G, my pet search engine which I use for demonstration as well as a research tool.

Brendan - Very cool. If readers want to read about what you’re working on where would be the best place to find you?

Tim - I have 3 blogs, For social media information Venture Skills Blog is the place to go. This is also where I try to release big research pieces such as our research on Social Begging and of course the Mathematics post. My other two blogs Tim Nash SEO and Payment Blogger are for SEOs and people looking to optimize or monetize sites rather than the search for traffic. They are also a place for me to chill and have a more relaxed time.

Brendan – Above you mentioned some research pertaining to StumbleUpon. Can you tell us what you’ve found thus far?

Tim - How long have we got, I have spent the best part of a year studying StumbleUpon and its users. A very condensed version of how I perceive StumbleUpon itself to work was laid out in the slightly controversial StumbleUpon Mathematics post which presented a very basic piece of math to give people a chance to see some of the factors at work. But I have also spent a fair amount of time earlier in the year looking at Digg and StumbleUpon and comparing the two and while 8 months is a lot of time, both of those posts are still relevant though perhaps some of the factors have changed a little. Certainly while StumbleUpon has continued to grow, Digg has seen a slide away from being the top dog in town.

Brendan - Yeah I think the community has definitely noticed Digg’s decline. What do you think the future holds for them?

Tim - Digg has certainly had its peak and is now like its predecessor Slashdot moving into a second phase where it quiets down a bit, the trolls will move on to new pastures like Mixx perhaps and you will be left with Digg going back to its routes, 17yr old adolescent males and their interests. One thing that is a bit of an enigma is Digg’s fascination in politics which would seem to fly in the face of its average user.

Brendan - That IS odd. Do you think this anomaly is due to people like Ron Paul hiring social media experts to exaggerate their popularity? Furthermore, what percentage of Digg users do you think are search marketers?

Tim - While I’m not very much up on US politics it certainly seems to be that several politicians have recently spent a lot of money chasing after the social media vote. The question is what sort of results these campaigns are getting I suppose we will know if they are elected.

Tim - I think that in reality the number of search marketers on Digg are quite small though they may well have multiple accounts, but the amount of noise they make gives the perception that there is a large crowd and perhaps account for some of the bad blood between the Digg crowd and marketers.

Brendan - What do you make of vote purchasing services like Subvert and Profit?

Tim - They have little or no chance of working over the long term, certainly from StumbleUpon’s point of view the algorithm naturally will discount any long term use and Digg’s unofficial moderators no doubt have their own methods of detection.

Brendan - Between Digg and StumbleUpon, which model do you like best and why?

Tim - StumbleUpon has the excitement of not knowing what’s coming next so from the users perspective I find it great way to spend a few hours. The Digg model is great if you already have a preconceived idea of what you are looking for, or are looking for something recent and new. It is after all a news site.

Brendan - Now correct me if I’m wrong but word on the street is you’re starting a membership type site?

Tim Nash - Yes. I’ve been planning on setting up a membership site for a while now aiming it at the intermediate to advanced SEO/SMO users. Since my original idea several member sites have appeared so I hope people will still be interested in what I have to offer.

Brendan - I think the interest will be based on the level of the content’s quality and judging from what you’ve published in the past, I’d be willing to bet that your membership site will be quite successful. When do you plan on opening the doors? Do you have any promotional offerings for your future members?

Tim - I’m hoping to open the doors at the start of next month as for what will be on offer, the opening content will include a few useful tools such as a working example of my Mulldina strategy as a Wordpress plugin, a short course on tracking social media users, several articles on our recent research and an Ebook “The Social Media Mechanic “ which will also be available separately a month later. The goal is to add at least one or two articles a month along with additional tools and courses. The price for all this will be set reasonably low no more then $20/month.

Brendan - Wow that IS reasonable. Jim Boykin recently released his Internet Marketing Ninjas membership website at a membership rate of $250.00/month. I haven’t heard the reviews yet but maybe that’s because no one’s signing up at that price point. $20.00/month makes way more sense. With quality content at a rate like that I’m sure you’ll drum-up a large member base.

Brendan - Lastly, is there any juicy knowledge you could share with our readers today about social media or tips and tricks pertaining to the sites therein?

Tim - People chase numbers and very understandably but if you are using social media to gain backlinks to your site it is often worth ignoring the big sites and finding your local niche media site such as Sphinn. These sites often require only a few votes to become hot and so can be a great place to garner the initial push which in turn will lead to more votes on the bigger sites. If using these sites, one very simple trick is to look at the up and coming lists, when your site gains a few votes start voting for posts near the top of the up and coming while ignoring posts below your own. This will help your site rise a little more quickly. Ultimately it’s about getting the right people to see your posts and that’s what we all want after all.

Brendan Picha - Fantasic advice Tim. Thank you for speaking with us today. One last thing…Does your new membership site have a name yet? What can our readers be on the lookout for?

Tim - Very sadly the current working title is members.timnash.co.uk [laughs]. However any suggestions appreciated from you or your readers but as it stands the site will be part of timnash.co.uk rather than its own name unless someone can come up with a great suggestion. Social Media Ninja seems to be out.

Brendan - Maybe we can come up with a few names and have a vote. Winning name and contributor of said name gets 3 months of free membership access?

Tim - Maybe a month :) and certainly a few copies of the Social Mechanic could be found.

Brendan – [Laughs] sounds good. Ok Tim thanks again for talking with us. Be sure to let us all know when the membership site goes live. We’re eager to check it out.

Tim - Will do.

Post Toaster Toasts It’s Friends and Gets A Bookmarklet

Well the Post Toaster project has gone exceptionally well. We’re getting a lot of good responses and requests from people asking me to add new sites to the list. I think my best media mentions were from Lee Odden on TopRankBlog and WebProNews. Post Toaster’s announcement on Sphinn went hot and although I haven’t listened to it yet (hasn’t published), I’ve been told that folks were talking about it on Mixx’s Social Blend podcast under the MixxingBowl blog. I do have to hand it to my man Jason Falls for being the very first person to pick-up on the project. As soon as he heard he threw up a blog post in no time. His post talks about the site lacking a bookmarklet but no more. Good news Jason, Post Toaster now has a bookmarklet which was created and uploaded last night. Lastly, I need to mention and thank the ninja coder Tim Nash for helping me create the bookmarklet. Not only is Tim absolutely brilliant when it comes to pretty much anything online related but he’s an awfully nice guy too.

New Social Bookmarking Tool Post Toaster, 60+ sites, missing nofollows, and post randomizer

Social Bookmarking2 Comments »

Well I finally finished it. It took about 25 hours but it’s done for now. Post Toaster is a social bookmarking tool that speeds up the bookmarking process. PT contains a little over 60 bookmarking and social news sites. You have the option to select between all social news sites, all social bookmarking sites, or sites that do not support the nofollow attribute. I use services like this all the time however the stuff that was previously out there now isn’t really cutting the mustard. They don’t have all the sites I use or nearly enough of them. So I had to build my own. Let me know if you like it, have suggestions, or want me to add your favorite site to it. Right now it is missing a bookmarklet but I’m working on that :) Enjoy!

Wordpress Installation/Integration Guide Written for A Client and The Plugins I Use

Wordpress Plugins1 Comment »

Most of what you’ll need to know when installing Wordpress can be found in the documentation that accompanies its download. Once the installation is complete you’ll have to configure the look and feel to match your current site. This isn’t going to be exactly the same but we can get it very close. There are many free templates out there that you can download and install. Once you install you can then further customize it as you need to. That’s one of the great things about Wordpress, it’s completely open source and highly customizable. Once we have all our ducks in a row with the install and customization there are things called extensions or plugins that increase the functionality of your Wordpress blog. These are essential as Wordpress out of the box doesn’t come with all the bells & whistles you’ll need. The following is a list of those extensions and where they can be found. These are the extensions that I use on my blog so if I use them you know they have to be good ;)

Feedburner Feedsmith
Your Wordpress blog comes with two feeds, one for your content and one for you comments. People very rarely subscribe to the comments so we can ignore this one. What the Feedburner Feedsmith plugin does is automatically converts your wordpress feed into the Feedburner feed to maximize control and syndication of your content through feedburner.

Google Analytics Plugin
There are tons of different types of analytic software out there but most use Google Anayltics. This plugin will allow you to integrate the Google javascript snippet throughout the pages of your site automatically.

Automatic Google Sitemap Generator
This handy tool automatically rewrites your sitemap as many times a day as you need it to. You can also specify priority of content and how often that content should be checked for updates. It will automatically write and add the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz zipped file to your root directory.

Head META Description pluging
Head Meta Description provides an automatic meta description tag for your blog, inserting a dynamic description depending on the query-type (i.e. page you’re on). Very useful tool as Wordpress doesn’t do this automatically.

Optimal Title Plugin
This allows you to move your blogs name to the back of the title instead of having it written first.

Redirection Plugin
Instead of having to deal with .htaccess markup, you can simply install this plugin and you can manage all your redirects from within Wordpress

Robots META Plugin
This plugin will allow you the edit your robots.txt file from within Wordpress. Also has some additional functionality with allow/deny options.

ShareThis Plugin
This one isn’t necessary but it helps from an SEM standpoint. This pluging allows you or your readers to easily post your content to bookmarking or social news sites. You can add or subtract sites at will. Also allows your readers to email your posts.

6 Web Tools That You Can’t Live Without

Tools7 Comments »

If you’re a nerdbox like me, you love online tools. Anything that makes a day easier is worth bookmarking. Overtime I’ve collected some great tools and web apps that I’d like to share with you today. Hopefully you’ll find these as helpful as I have.

htaccess file generator

.htaccess File Generator
This is a neat little .htaccess file generator that pretty much covers everything you might need to include in your .htaccess file. As you fill in the details about your site’s domain, redirects needed, allow/deny particulars etc, this web app will write your .htaccess file for you at the bottom of the page. Once you’re done, simply copy and paste your new .htaccess data into a .txt file, save and upload to your root.

Copyscape

Duplicate Content Detection
Copyscape is a great duplicate content detector. Google has provided Copyscape with a high-capacity Web APIs key for use with Google Alerts. From the homepage you can enter your URL and Copyscape will scan the web searching for any instances of duplicate content. I haven’t used this recently but I think there’s a limit on how many searches you can perform per day. If you sign-up for their premium service, each search costs 5 cents. They also provide CopySentry which will automatically monitor the web searching for real-time instances of content duplication. This service is priced at $4.95/month.

Intelways

Search for your term over multiple sites via one interface
Intelways allows you to search for your term through at least 100 different sites which include search engines, video, photo, social media, and popular commerce sites. If you’re looking for something niche or something that requires every informational resource, this is your spot.

SEOdigger

Find out what your top ranking keywords are
SEOdigger is an interesting tool where you can enter your domain (or competitor’s) and find out which of your keywords rank high enough to be listed within Google’s top 20. It also compares keyword popularity with Wordtracker and Overture. Additionally, report data is CSV exportable. Site does require registration for complete use.

http://www.mcanerin.com/EN/search-engine/robots-txt.asp
Robot.txt file generator and validation
Not that creating a robot.txt file requires a degree in aeronautical engineering but this app can be fun to use and helpful if you need to block some bots. There’s also a robots.txt validation checker on this site just in case you need a second opinion on your robots.txt markup.

Test Everything

Test everything…the mother load
There’s a very bright young man out there named Jonas John from Germany. This guy is a wiz and builds web apps, software, browser extensions and an array of other useful things. This one portal in particular allows you to utilize CSS and HTML checkers, SEO tools, social services, web proxies, network tools, text tools, image tools, and other miscellaneous tools all from one location. Good things to come from this guy. Make sure you check out his other projects on his homepage.

Add Mixx to the Share This Wordpress Plugin

Mixx, Social Media, Social NewsNo Comments »

I created a post like this before for Sphinn and thought I’d do the same for Mixx. If you’re interested in adding Mixx to the Share This plugin from Alex King (see Share This icon above), I’ve made it very simple for you. Right click and save this favicon:

Mixx Favicon

Then in the admin section in Wordpress, go to Plugins and click the Edit button for the Share This plugin. Add this line of code:

, 'mixx' => array(
'name' => 'Mixx'
, 'url' => 'http://www.mixx.com/submit?page_url={url}&title={title}'
)

And that’s it! Mixx is definitely catching on and we’ve noticed that referral traffic is increasing. Tamar has commented on how early adoption is important and Brian about how banned Digg users are moving to Mixx. People are talking and migrating, a new and powerful social news site is being born.

404 Pages - Funny, Geeky, Disturbing

Commentary, Humor16 Comments »

I recently moved some directories on my website and I’m now redirecting some residual 404s. In the process, I was thinking about creating a customized 404 page and wanted to see what other folks were doing with their 404s. What I found was funny, geeky, disturbing yet all around, entertaining. Here are some of the jems I found:

Blog Jams - Lionel Richie

There’s music with this one. Lionel Richie is singing, “well hello, is it me you’re looking for”. The overly sensitive males of the cheesy 80’s get to host this 404.
http://www.blogjam.com/whatever

Trinicom 404

You’ll notice just about every story on this faux news page pertains to a 404. Note the All Your Base reference at the bottom right.
http://www.trinicom.com/trinicom/servererror/404.htm

Pownce 404

Of course Pownce…”it’s a trap!”. Simple and funny.
http://www.pownce.com/404.html

Retard Zone 404

This one comes from Retard Zone. The combo of aesthetics, bizarreness, and ridicularity merge in this Bermuda Triangle of a 404.
http://retardzone.com/ifarted

Gelato Cms 404

This 404 displays a cracked out milk shake running and screaming across the screen while evil techno music plays in the background.
http://gelatocms.com/404

Zug 404

Not only is the page missing but here are some other things that have also gone missing: http://www.zug.com/mp3/nothere.htm

Baxizgd 404

Pretty cool albeit geeky 404 which presents 37 different moments from the Capcom game Phoenix Wright in all its 8 bit glory.
http://www.bazixgd.com/nonexistantpage

Etsy 404

Etsy has a great 404 from Nintendo’s Link (a game I probably played way too much back in the day).
http://www.etsy.com/error.php?error_id=12

Jib Jab 404

Of course Jib Jab would have something funny right? Not bad:
http://www.jibjab.com/404.html

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters has one…not that impressive, only because they paid someone half a cent in Malaysia to build it.
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/html/404.html

B3ta 404

B3ta presents a slideshow of various 404 themed images. Some NFSW.

Don’t Forget Your FeedFlare!

Blogging, Feedburner, SEMNo Comments »

Office Space FlairEver since Google acquired FeedBurner the functionality has become nothing short of badass. There are a couple features that I really love and should not be forgotten about if you own a blog. Inside FeedBurner under the Optimize section there’s a tab on the left-hand nav for Feed Flare. Here you can enable emailing of your post, emailing the author, insert a link to Technorati search results, display the number of comments your post has received, insert a feed subscription link, a sphere link, insert a add to del.icio.us link, indicate how many times people have saved your post via del.icio.us, submit to Digg, submit to Facebook, geotag in Outside.in (great site btw), discuss on Newsvine, and submit to StumbleUpon. Whew! As you can see, enabling these features will help your feed subscribers help you by making it damn easy for them to spread the word.

Also, not everyone (silver surfers) are up-to-date with the whole RSS thing and still do everything via email. Feedburner can allow your visitors to subscribe via email. You can specify when they get your emails, what the subject or title says, and even brand them by inserting your own logo. This is quite a fantastic service that’s easy to implement all while saving time and money by circumventing older email campaigning services.

Don’t forget to activate these great (not to mention free) services. Your blog will love you for it!

Consumer Name Based Marketing - Alex Likes Apples, Ben Likes Bananas

Economics, Marketing, SEMNo Comments »

Last Wednesday Newsweek published an interesting article about how people prefer things or are likely to be associated with things that begin with the same letter as the first letter in their name. For instance an Alex is more likely to grade better and receive an A on a homework assignment than a Dan. Brian is more likely to attend Brandeis, Babson, or Brown University. Tom is more likely to date a Tara, Tina, or Teresa than a Lindsey, Elizabeth, or Kelly.

So my question is, how could this be applied to SEO, SEM, SMO, marketing or online sales in general? One thing you could do is create content or an affiliate program based on the most popular names in English speaking countries. While doing a quick search on most popular US names, this is what comes up as the top five for boys and girls from 1960 - 1990:

The five most popular names of the 1960’s were:
Boys: Michael, David, John, James, Robert
Girls: Lisa, Mary, Susan, Karen, Kimberly

The five most popular names of the 1970’s were:
Boys: Michael, Christopher, Jason, David, James
Girls: Jennifer, Amy, Melissa, Michelle, Kimberly

The five most popular names of the 1980’s were:
Boys: Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, David
Girls: Jessica, Jennifer, Amanda, Ashley, Sarah

The five most popular names of the 1990’s were:
Boys: Michael, Christopher, Matthew, Joshua, Jacob
Girls: Jessica, Ashley, Emily, Sarah, Samantha

So from this data we could surmise that THE most popular names of children born between 1960 – 1990 start with the letters (M, J, S, A, K).

There are loads of successful ad campaigns that happened when these children became old enough to becoming consumers. Let’s look at some successful ad campaigns from the 1970’s –2000’s that start with or contain the letters (M, J, S, A, K):

Alka-Seltzer, 1970’s
Miller Lite Beer, “Tastes great, less filling”, 1974
Burger King, “Have it your way”, 1973
American Express, “Do you know me?”, 1975
Chanel, “Share the fantasy”, 1979
AT&T, “Reach out and touch someone”, 1979
Molson Beer, Laughing Couple, 1980s
U.S. Army, “Be all that you can be”, 1981
Absolute Vodka: Absolute Bottle, 1981
Apple Computer “1984”, 1984
Levi Jeans, “501 blues”, 1984
Bartles & Jaymes, “Frank and Ed”, 1985
Saturn, “A different kind of company, A different kind of car.”, 1989
California Milk Processor Board, “Got Milk?”, 1993
ESPN Sports, “This is SportsCenter”, 1995

Obviously we would need better data than this to see a relationship between sales and a correlation between the first letter of someone’s name and the products or services they choose to purchase. Based on the data from Newsweek I’d be willing to bet that this information could prove useful for marketing but I don’t think I’m ready to start selling services or writing content whose names or titles only begin with (M, J, S, A, K). However, please note the spelling of the Newsweek article’s title. Think that was intentional?
